In the turbulent waters of life, two figures find themselves facing raging storms. Jonah and Jesus both experience the fury of the sea, but their responses and outcomes couldn’t be more different. Let us take a look into both scenarios and the contrast they provide.
Jonah’s sleep is a symbol of his exhaustion, a physical manifestation of his spiritual turmoil. He’s running from God’s will, and the storm is a consequence of his disobedience. In contrast, Jesus’ slumber is a testament to his trust in the Father. He’s not fazed by the turmoil around him, for he knows he’s in control. In the case of Jesus, the storm also was not a consequence of anything he did, as it was in Jonah’s, but rather, just nature taking its course.
The storm may roar on, but the outcome relies on who is at the helm. Will it result in calamity or calm? The answer is found in the heart of the person who navigates the waves. Jonah’s story is a cautionary tale, emphasizing the repercussions of disobedience. Meanwhile, Jesus’ tale provides hope by illustrating the strength of faith and trust. Both scenarios show the storm settling down, but through distinct mechanisms. Jonah had to face the severe storm and suffer throughout, whereas Jesus simply spoke and calmed it down.

As we face storms, which path will we choose? Will we try to flee, or will we trust in a higher power? The choice is ours, and the outcome hangs in the balance. Delayed obedience is simply disobedience, which may open one up to the harsh consequences that may present themselves.
May we learn from Jonah’s mistakes and Jesus’ example, trusting in God’s sovereignty amidst life’s turmoil. May our hearts be anchored in faith, and may God’s peace calm the waves of our lives.

I choose calmness and to focus on Christ.
